The Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) reveals significant health disparities between Black and White women during menopause and midlife. Black women experience menopause earlier, with more severe and longer-lasting vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats) than White women.
They also face higher rates of depressive symptoms, poorer sleep quality, worse cardio-metabolic health, and lower health-related quality of life. These disparities are linked to structural racism, socioeconomic disadvantages, and greater exposure to life stressors.
While menopause itself is not a direct cause of mortality, the related health conditions and systemic inequalities may influence women’s health trajectories during midlife. And these factors can contribute to a higher risk of mortality in the long term.
